Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty, is often covered by health insurance. It can be a cosmetic procedure if someone simply would like smaller breasts. However, because there is typically pain, a breast reduction can be considered a medially necessary surgery.

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that removes excess fat, tissue, and skin to create a breast size more proportionate with a women’s body size. A breast reduction is sought after by women who have disproportionally large breasts. This may cause them physical pain and emotional distress.

Many of my patients have been helped by breast reduction. For years, these women have struggled with neck and back pain, indentations on their shoulders from bras, and skin irritations. Additionally, large breasts can cause women to feel self conscious, limit their physical activity, and make choosing clothing difficult. By reducing the size of their breasts, we can relieve pain and lift spirits,” said Dr. Said A Samra, founder of Samra Plastic Surgery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a breast reduction is about $5500 plus anesthesia and surgical facility costs. These costs my be covered by health insurance providers. The individual will need to get prior authorization from their medical insurance plan before having the surgery.

The procedure is usually performed through incisions that can remove excess skin. In some cases, additional fat may be removed with liposuction or liposuction may be used alone if skin is not an issue. The procedure or combination of procedures is based on the individual and how much tissue needs to be removed to achieve the desired outcome.

Patients go home after the surgery with bandages and a support bra to reduce swelling. In some cases, they may have temporary drains to help remove fluids. Pain medications and stitches will be discussed. Patients will most likely have tenderness, some swelling, and possible bruising. They will need to take it easy for 2-4 weeks. Scars will fade over time and can be easily hidden under bras and bathing suits.
