The field of Pain Management is constantly evolving. Anyone who suffers from pain can welcome a new treatment option, EPAT.

EPAT® stands for Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology and is a form of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy. This emerging treatment option has proven to assist patients suffering from both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. The word “extracorporeal” comes from two Latin roots: extra (outside) and corp (body). Consequently, Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment is noninvasive because it happens completely outside of the body. No needles and no surgery required!

This FDA-cleared technology was developed in Europe and is currently used around the globe. A wealth of medical experience, state-of-the-art engineering and optimal quality have been built into each EPAT device, and extensive clinical studies and tests have confirmed its safety and efficacy.

As we age and put stress on our bodies through exercise, the tissues in our bodies can degenerate. Poor blood circulation, repeat injuries, overuse, and weakness can also cause degeneration, and therefore poor healing. By exposing these injured tissues to specific sound waves, EPAT can improve healing by increasing blood circulation.

EPAT® uses acoustic pressure waves to safely increase metabolism and blood flow, stimulating or enhancing healing of the injury.  The microtrauma induced, triggers a cascade of inflammatory factors such as cytokines and chemokines that help regenerate the damaged tissue.  These inflammatory factors are essential for healing and are present at high levels in acute injuries but diminish or cease to exist over time in chronic injuries.

Examples of conditions treated with EPAT®:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Posterior Tibial Tendonitis
  • Anterior Tibial Tendonitis
  • Plantar Plate Injuries
  • Peroneal Tendonitis
  • Interdigital Neuromas

EPAT is a quick, in-office treatment. Its treatment sessions usually only take 5 – 10 minutes. However, the length can vary depending on what injury or condition of the musculoskeletal system is being treated.

The beneficial effects of EPAT are often experienced after only 3 treatments. Some patients report immediate pain relief after the treatment, although it can take up to four weeks for pain relief to begin. The procedure can eliminate pain and restore full mobility, thus improving your quality of life. More than 80% of patients treated report to be pain free or have significant pain reduction.

In addition to providing pain relief or pain reduction, EPAT does the following:

  • Accelerates the healing process
  • Improves blood flow and circulation
  • Restores mobility
  • Stimulates the metabolism
  • Treats the source of the pain or injury
