Nutrition Month Insights from Dr. Neda Gioia

Nutrition Month Insights from Dr. Neda Gioia

How is your #nutritionmonth going?   It’s a wonderful opportunity to start (if you haven’t already) a consistent nutrition protocol with your diet.   But questions abound, where and how do you start?  What kind of, and which supplements would work for me?   It can be confusing and a minefield at first glance, but there are basic essentials that you can easily incorporate into your regimen. Besides a balanced diet there are great additions that you can make to your eating and nutrition habits.  Below I’ve covered some of the most important.

Gut Health: On Prebiotics, Probiotics & Synbiotics

Let me quickly talk about the Gut Microbiome — your gut has 3 major Phyla:

  • Firmicutes
  • Bacteroidetes
  • Actinobacteria

These Phyla need PREBIOTICS (food for beneficial microbes) for growth. A healthy balance of these essential bacteria synthesize vitamins B and K. They in turn manufacture short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which have been linked to reducing cancer risk, cholesterol, improve mineral absorption, reduce inflammation, help the gut integrity and barrier system, immune enhancement, anti-obesity and diabetes, and producing beta-glucuronidase. And many more systems that probiotics support!  Remember probiotics are ALIVE! Also they rarely actually colonize the gut so consistent use and intake is key.

How to decipher your probiotic label.

  • CFU are colony forming units
  • avoid products that say “at time of manufacture”,
  • CFU listed for each STRAIN is preferred

You need to know all 3 parts of the bacteria name.

Great brands include this information!

  •  genus
  •  species
  • strain

A synbiotic is defined as a “mixture of probiotics and prebiotics that beneficially affects the host by improving the survival and activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut. Every brand has their own ‘cocktail’ of how much pre- vs probiotics they contain, so shop around.

Taking the Guesswork out of Supplements

Not sure about your supplements? Are they working? Are they being absorbed?  With so many conflicting glam mag tabloid level jargon out there it’s hard to really know.

A good start are some of my usual favorites.   These are GREAT at incorporating into smoothies as well, if you’re into that or juicing;

Eye Exam PLUS™ — The next level in ocular nutrition

I have created a nutrition protocol  specializing in ocular health called Eye Exam PLUS™;

I created it for:

  • Patients struggling with current or protentional eye conditions such as dry eye, macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, etc.
  • Those looking to clean up their supplement regimen and support eye health by harnessing the power of micronutrients and antioxidants. Receive general supplement recommendations for overall health and holistic wellness.
  • Eye Exam PLUS™ is for those who desire a deeper knowledge of how to optimize their ocular health and overall health enhancement through supplementation and lifestyle habits.

In addition to a standard, but advanced eye exam, I also assist patients with the above concerns earlier mentioned in this post — from pre- and probiotics to full supplement help.
